LAMINATE $
Laminate countertops (also called Formica) are the most common type of top, and the least expensive. Laminate tops are available in hundreds of different colours, and have numerous different edge profiles. Laminate also offers a few different textures, along with a new “HD” top which resembles a natural stone top. Laminate is very low maintenance, resists most stains, and is very easy to clean.
SOLID SURFACE $$
Solid surface countertops are manufactured in sheets in a variety of different colours and patterns (including some stone like finishes) , all with a very rich looking texture. Solid surface is 7 times stronger than granite and is lighter than granite. It is non-porous, bacteria and stain resistant. It is very easy to maintain and most minor cuts or burns can be removed with buffing or sandpaper.
GRANITE $$$
Granite provides homeowners with versatility and timeless beauty. Its highly polished surface is durable, but, as it is a natural material, it is porous and may stain. There may also be small pits or cracks in the granite that will require regular maintenance. Since granite slabs vary, it is suggested that the customer visit a warehouse and tag the exact slab they wish to use, as small colour chips often do not show the full beauty and colour markings in the material.
ENGINEERED SURFACE $$$$
These tops are made of approximately 93% Quartz and 7% Pure Resin. They are extremely stain, scratch and heat resistant; as Quartz is the 4th hardest substance known to man (only diamonds, sapphires and topaz are harder). It is non-porous, non-microbial and very hygienic. Engineered surfaces are available in a wide range of colours, which are quite consistent, making choosing from a small sample possible. These surfaces are maintenance free and the joints are virtually invisible.
